Our visit to Waterford County also included a stop to see the gardens at Lismore Castle, which is located on the outskirts of the Heritage Town of Lismore.
Lismore Castle has been there since 1185. The castle itself is not open to outside visitors as it is the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The castle is situated in a position overlooking the Blackwater Valley with it's views of over rolling, wooded hills to the Knockmealdown Mountains beyond.
The historic gardens are divided into 2 halves... the Upper Garden and the Lower Garden. We visited the Upper Garden, which is an example of the 17th century walled garden first constructed here by the 1st Earl of Cork, Richard Boyle in about 1605.
